Transforming Public Spaces asks Bangkok citizens to
identify buildings, streets and other public spaces they would
like to see improved or transformed. Through a competition,
people are invited to name such places, with a photo, and
vote via the website www.changebangkok.com. The ‘winner’
will be the subject of a collaborative ‘intervention’ by
local creatives and a UK artist.

As part of our Creative Cities project, the British Council has invited UK artist Maria Stukoff to Bangkok to meet with local artists to explore how they can create an art intervention in the Victory Monument area, which was voted by Bangkok citizens as the public space they would most like to be transformed. Maria’s work focuses on designing public art experiences that encourage playful encounters and shared experiences between the public and the urban environment.

Congratulations to the 10 winners who will each receive who will each receive a prize of 7,000 baht in cash!

Speaking on behalf of the panel of judges, David Elliott, Head Programmes, British Council commented that “The judges found it very difficult to select only 10 photos out of more than 800 photo submitted via the website, but eventually we were able to make the selection based on the idea, framing of the photo, the accompanying comment and how many votes the photo received.”

Thank you so much for everyone who participated in this competition.

The judging panel is now discussing which of the Top 10 public spaces will be transformed during 2009. Watch this space!

Inspiring ways to work with Arts
11-09-08
The UK has used the arts to help transform public spaces and regenerate cities in many different ways. Here are some examples. These – and others – could work in Bangkok!
Architecture
There is no doubt that architecture is the most prominent art form when trying to interpret Transforming Public Spaces project. Here are some inspiring examples from the UK.
Visual Arts
Visual Arts is also a key art form to work with for urban regeneration, especially graffiti which is sometimes regarded as art and other times regarded as unsightly damage or vandalism.
Literature
Who would have thought that literature would play a role in transforming the urban environment, but here are some examples.
Fashion
Think about working across disciplines to create something unexpected in a public space. Check out two interesting cases from the UK.
Music
Music events such as live music gigs and site-specific sound works in public spaces that aims to engage with communities are guaranteed to inspire practitioners and the public to reconsider their environments.
Others
Of course, there are many other ways to transform public spaces. Cross-arts projects, city-wide festivals, site-specific art tour, collaborative design product, networking, seminars and online programmes are all possible. Think big and let’s work together to make Bangkok a better place to live!

Wind to Light

The Project “Wind to Light” of Jason Burges Not only being a practical art
itself, the idea of its design also allows the natural energies to participate,
No matters what it is called, art or design, it had already done it’s work
interestingly by reflecting beauty and functions.
